The Main Components – What To Know

If you are new to the world of vaping, you may not know much about e-liquids apart from the fact that they are flavored liquids used in e-cigarettes. Also known as e-juice or vape juice, e-liquid is essentially the liquid that is turned into vapor by an e-cig device.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene Glycol (PG) serves as the base of e-liquid, along with Vegetable Glycerine (VG), responsible for carrying the nicotine and flavorings into vapor when the liquid is heated up. PG is an odorless and colorless compound that has no taste. It has been widely used even before e-cigarettes were a thing in many products, including cosmetics, medication, as well as in smoke or fog machines. While Propylene Glycol does perform better as a carrier than Vegetable Glycerine, it makes less vapor.

Vegetable Glycerine

Vegetable Glycerine is one of the two carrier bases. Just like PG, it does not have any odor, color, and taste. That being said, VG has a higher viscosity than PG, which means that it is thicker and stickier. When it comes to the ability to carry nicotine and flavorings, VG is inferior to PG. However, VG produces more vapor than PG. Different ratios of VG and PG can be used to attain different results with the liquids. The higher amount of VG, the more vapor the liquid will make, but at the cost of the liquid’s flavor.

Flavorings

Flavorings account for about ten to twenty percent of the e-liquid mixture. Currently, there are liquids of every flavor possible on the market. The flavorings should be food-grade and have already been used in baking or candy production. There are three main categories of flavorings:

// Natural Flavourings

These are flavorings made from plant or animal raw materials. They are used in either their natural state or processed for human consumption. Natural flavorings need to be extracted from natural materials and not created through the use of chemicals.

// Nature-Identical Flavourings

Nature-identical flavorings have identical chemical compounds as natural flavors, but they can be synthesized chemically from any source.

// Artificial Flavourings

As the name suggests, artificial flavorings are made in laboratories to mimic or enhance natural flavors. In other words, artificial flavors can be made to smell and taste the same way as natural flavorings do.

Cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco products all contain nicotine. Nicotine is another important component in e-liquids. It is clear and with almost no color. Also, nicotine is the only active ingredient in e-liquids.

The substance is absorbed into the bloodstream, where it gets transmitted to the brain, stimulating the adrenal gland and producing adrenaline as a result. Nicotine also stimulates the production dopamine – a chemical that is responsible for regulating the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. This explains why nicotine is an addictive substance. Nicotine occurs naturally in tobacco, but it can also be synthetically made.
