E-Liquid

A Comprehensive Guide

E-liquid can be referred to as “vape juice,” “e-juice,” or “e-cig liquid.” In simple terms, e-liquid is the liquid that is used to fuel an electronic cigarette or e-cig. If you are new to the electronic cigarette world, you may have all sorts of questions regarding vape juice. This article will tell you all about the most important things that you should know about e-liquid.

How Does E-Liquid Work?
E-liquid in electronic cigarettes is comparable to tobacco in regular cigarettes, but without the combustion. The liquid in the cartridge or tank is vaporized by the atomizer, giving the smoker the sensation of smoking. Vape juice can be considered as the most significant part of an electronic cigarette. Apart from having a great e-cig, you also need quality e-juice in order to get the best vapor taste and throat hit possible.

What Ingredients Are in E-Liquid?
Unlike combustible tobacco cigarettes, electronic cigarettes contain only a few ingredients, including nicotine, flavoring, and propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG). Let’s take a look at each ingredient in more detail:

1. Propylene Glycol (PG)
Compared to vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol is the more popular choice. It has a thin consistency and has more fluidity than VG. This makes it easier for the polyfill fabric inside the cartomizer to absorb the liquid. Since PG has such low density, slime does not accumulate on the e-cig’s heating element as fast as it does on the VG juice, which is thicker. Propylene glycol has no taste and smell, which means that it will not hinder the overall flavor of the vape juice. Moreover, it is a strong humectant, and it can make your mouth and throat become dry if used consistently. As PG provides a strong throat hit found in regular cigarettes, it has become a popular alternative for smokers who want to quit smoking. However, some e-cig smokers have reported having allergic reactions to PG, ranging from minor to severe irritations on different areas of the body. If you experience any allergic symptom after using PG-based juice, then you should stop using it immediately and opt for vegetable glycerin instead.

2. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
Vegetable glycerin is much thicker than PG. It also has a hint of sweet taste as well, making for a sweeter e-liquid. While PG can give users a dry mouth, VG will not. That being said, there are some users who do not like having phlegm build up in their throat after using VG-based juice. VG also gives less throat hit and has more vapor than PG, making it a preferred choice for cloud chasers and vapers who favor something less strong. Also, VG does not stimulate allergic reactions as much as PG does.

// Which One Should I Use?
It all comes down to personal preference when it comes to choosing between PG and VG. If you are seeking a similar experience to smoking cigarettes, then PG-based e-liquid is the better option for you. If you want to get the best both worlds, you can mix the two together in a ratio of your choice if you DIY. However, the industry standards these days are 80/20 and 70/30 VG/PG mixes respectively.

3. Nicotine
Another important ingredient of e-liquid is, of course, nicotine. A regular cigarette contains 18 mg of nicotine. The concentration of nicotine in e-liquid depends on one’s personal preference, typically ranging from 0 mg to 12 mg  in freebase e-liquid intended for sub-ohm and 25-50 mg in nicotine salt juices that are intended for pod systems. The higher the concentration, the stronger the throat hit. For extreme vapers or those who recently quit smoking, nicotine concentration should be around 6-12 mg for sub-ohm and 50 mg for nicotine salt pod devices. For beginners, make sure to test out which mg works best for you and scale up or down depending on your needs.

4. Flavor
The flavor is the last e-liquid ingredient – and one that makes electronic cigarettes so popular. There are already countless flavors on the market for you to choose from, which can sometimes be extremely overwhelming, especially for beginners. However, it also means that you get to constantly experiment with new flavors, making vaping such an exciting adventure. You can enjoy trying new flavors until you find the best flavor that you love the most.

General Recommendations
It is highly recommended that you store your e-liquids in a cool, dry place, such as a closed box. Avoid your e-liquids from being exposed to direct sunlight. Many vendors even use colored glass bottles to reduce exposure to sunlight. In general, e-liquid that is two years past its manufacturing date should be thrown out.
